Maika`i Kamakani `O Kohala

NHLC is fighting to protect this stunning Pao`o landscape, rich with archaeological remains.  A mainland financier proposes to build a large residential compound at Pao`o, jeopadizing the archaeological integrity, cultural resources, and scenic beauty of the area.

Pāo`o lies in North Kohala on the island of Hawai`i – just south of Lapakahi State Historical Park.

Like Lapakahi, the landscape of Pāo`o is dominated by archaeological sites. One of the more prominent features was marked on a 1924 map: Kauwe’s Grave. For generations, native Hawaiians have exercised traditional and customary practices on this parcel – and the approximately 10 km section of undeveloped coastline surrounding it. Generations of native Hawaiians have used the three trails that cross through Pāo`o.

These traditional and customary practices are jeopardized by Aloha Properties, LLC. The corporation proposes to build a residential compound covering over 10,000 square feet. This compound would dwarf Kauwe’s grave -- thirty feet away – as well as other archaeological features fifteen feet from the compound. It would have a substantial adverse impact to the burial and other important cultural sites of Pāo`o – such as two ancient trails that pass directly next to the site.

The Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation is representing Maika`i Kamakani O Kohala in order to protect the cultural integrity of Pāo`o.
